Tournament Summary
Thanks to all of our generous sponsors, donors, and volunteers, the Fourth Annual Sarah James Fulcher Redfish tournament was a huge success! Thank you to also all of the attendees for following COVID guidelines and keeping the Tournament safe.
Results
This year, the SJF Redfish Tournament not only broke its prior years’ records for anglers, boats, fundraising, and prizes, but also beat two world records! Anglers set lines out at 6PM and we were very blessed this year with gorgeous weather and lots of fish caught! An estimated 500+ citation Red Drum were caught in just four hours.
Tournament organizers counted a total of 604 anglers registered this year, and over 3,500 attendees! Making the Sarah James Fulcher Fishing Tournament the BIGGEST Red Drum Fishing Tournament in the WORLD!
The competition was extra fierce this year, but local boy Gaib Gillikin pulled through, winning First Place, & the Ramsey Family Calcutta, taking home a $63,500 purse! Setting the WORLD RECORD for the biggest first place prize for a Red Fish. Gillikin’s prize winning Old Drum measured 51 inches, beating second place by only an 1/8 of an inch.
Gaib & Ronald are both 20 year-olds from Down East, they are good friends, and good people! This was Gillikin’s first try at the SJF Tournament, but he didn’t keep the money all for himself. He split the money with his buddy and Captain Ronald Sanders! Gillikin stated, “We used his boat. We had agreed before. We said if we won it, we’d split it half and half.” They got the fish in the boat at 9:30 with just half an hour left to win! Gillikin said, “When we got him in the boat, we knew he was a big one. We felt good about it. It’s pretty amazing. For a four-hour drum tournament, I’d say we did pretty good!”
